Liam Taylor runs Derbyshire Flooring Specialists. He has been working in property around the East Midlands for more than ten years, and flooring is the trade he came up through rather than one he added later: his first business laid floors, and everything since has been built on that.
That matters mostly in what gets said at the quote stage. You will be told if a floor you have picked is wrong for the room you want it in, and you will be told before the invoice rather than after it.
Why We Look Underneath First
Most floors that fail were never let down by the flooring. They were let down by whatever was hidden below, which nobody had bothered to look at: a base that was never flat, boards with movement in them, a joist end quietly rotting where it sits in a damp wall, screed still carrying moisture when the covering went over the top.
So where there is any doubt we lift a board and look before we quote. We would far rather tell you a floor needs levelling, or that the boards and joists want replacing, while you can still decide about it, than find it on the second morning with your furniture stacked in the garage. It is also why we do that work ourselves. A floor and the base beneath it stand or fall together, and where two firms share that boundary the argument about whose fault it was tends to outlast the floor.
The Commercial Side
A good part of our week is commercial, and it is a different discipline from fitting a floor at home. The materials are specified against wear ratings, slip resistance and fire classification rather than against a colour scheme. The detailing is different too: welded seams, cap coving, thresholds that will survive a trolley, entrance matting that catches the grit before it reaches the floor beyond.
The scheduling is usually the harder half. Kitchens go in overnight, offices at weekends, schools in the holidays to an immovable handover date. We have fitted floors in commercial kitchens, nurseries, salons, gyms, offices and corridors, and in every one of them the question that decided the job was when we could be in and out, not which product we were laying.
How We Quote and How We Work
There is no showroom, and that is a choice. Premises have to be paid for, and they get paid for out of the price of somebody's floor. Shop lighting misleads people too: a grey that looked warm on a display stand turns cold in a north-facing room. So the samples travel to you, and you judge them in the room the floor is going in.
You do not have to wait in for a visit to get a price. Send us photographs or a short video of the rooms through WhatsApp or the contact form, with rough measurements, and we aim to come back with a quote within 24 business hours. Where a job needs eyes on it, we will say so and arrange a visit.
Bought your own flooring? We will still fit it. Most people buy through us, but a fit-only job gets the same care as a supply and fit one. If what has arrived is the wrong product for that room, we will say so before we open the packs.
The old floor leaves with us. Taking up whatever is there now and getting rid of it is included, not an extra line at the bottom of the invoice.
Guarantees, Insurance and Finance
The business is fully insured for the work it carries out, and every installation comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. That sits alongside, and separately from, whatever warranty the flooring product itself carries.
Product warranties are a different matter, and they vary enormously between ranges and brands. Plenty are conditional on how the floor was fitted and how it has been looked after since. We would rather show you the actual terms attached to the range you are considering than wave the word guaranteed at you.

Two things follow. On a bigger project the flooring can be sequenced alongside the other trades instead of arriving, laying a floor and disappearing. And you are contracting with a registered company rather than a mobile number, which tends to matter more once a finance director or a facilities manager is involved.

No, and that is a choice rather than an oversight. Premises get paid for out of the price of somebody's floor, and a sample viewed under shop lighting tells you very little about how it will look at home. We bring the samples out to you instead, and you decide in the room itself.

We work evenings, weekends and closure days so the premises lose as little trading time as possible.
Will you fit flooring I have bought myself?
Yes, and it gets the same care as a supply and fit job. If the product that has arrived is wrong for that room we will tell you before we open the packs, but what you do about it is your call.
