Karndean has become popular in homes, offices and retail spaces alike. It costs more than most vinyl, and in return it gives a highly realistic finish, a wide choice of designs and formats, and a floor that copes with daily life.

Karndean is a British company, founded in 1973 and still based in Evesham, Worcestershire. It built its reputation on design choice: planks and tiles that can be combined, cut and bordered rather than simply rolled out, so no two floors need look the same.

The range runs well beyond wood and stone effects. Tiles can be mixed to create patterns and borders within a room or hallway, and design strips can be inlaid between tiles to imitate grout lines. It's durable enough for retail floors and canteens, and equally at home in a kitchen, utility room or bathroom.

Karndean comes in planks and tiles, and in more than one fitting format. Most of the range is glued down, which gives the thinnest, most stable floor and the best finish, but it depends on a properly prepared subfloor. A loose lay range can be laid over an existing floor without adhesive, which suits rooms where lifting the old floor isn't practical. A rigid core range clicks together like laminate, which makes it more forgiving over a slightly less perfect base.

Which format suits you depends on the room, the existing floor and the amount of preparation involved. We'll tell you what your floor needs, whether that's levelling and screeding or, where a timber floor is bouncing or sagging, replacing boards or joists first.

Renovations usually happen a floor at a time, with different surfaces in different rooms. We can supply and fit the lot in one visit: Karndean in the kitchen, carpet in the living room, tiles in the bathroom.

That makes the transitions between rooms much easier to get right, because we measure everything together and choose floor bars that suit both floors either side of the doorway. It also cuts down the disruption, since one team is in and out rather than three.
