Herringbone takes its name from the V-shaped pattern that resembles the bones of a herring. It's been laid in grand old houses and country estates for centuries, and it adds the same sense of quality to a modern room. The diagonal pattern gives a floor real movement and can make a space feel larger.
It's a style rather than a material. Historically it was solid or engineered wood, but vinyl and laminate now do the same job with the benefits modern materials bring. Our herringbone work focuses on those two rather than engineered wood, because wood adds a great deal to both material and fitting costs and puts the look out of reach for many budgets.
Vinyl or Laminate Herringbone
Laminate herringbone mimics real wood convincingly at a fraction of the price, lasts well with sensible care and is far easier to look after than a wood floor. The boards come as left and right handed planks that build the pattern, and they are smaller than standard laminate boards.
Vinyl herringbone is equally easy to maintain, and it is quieter and warmer underfoot, which widens where you can use it. It's also the better choice in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms, where a laminate would be at risk from standing water. Setting Out and Fitting Herringbone
Why a herringbone floor costs more to lay than a straight one.
A herringbone floor is built from many more, much smaller pieces than a straight-laid floor, and every one has to sit at the right angle to its neighbours. We set out from a centre line so the pattern runs true to the room and the cuts fall evenly at both walls, rather than starting at one wall and finishing with a sliver at the other.
That means it takes longer to lay, and it generates more offcuts, so expect to allow more material than for a straight lay. It's worth it: laid properly, a laminate or vinyl herringbone is hard to tell from solid wood at a glance.
The base matters too. Laminate herringbone in particular needs a flat floor, because a click floor built from small boards will telegraph any dip and can open at the joints. Vinyl is a little more forgiving, but not much. Where needed we level and prepare the floor first.

Which is better for herringbone, vinyl or laminate?
It depends on the room. Vinyl is quieter and warmer underfoot and copes with moisture, which makes it the safer choice in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. Laminate gives a very convincing wood look and is hard-wearing in dry rooms such as living rooms and bedrooms. We fit both and will give you a straight comparison.
Does the floor need to be level for herringbone?
Flat, more than level. Laminate herringbone especially needs a flat base, because a floor built from small boards shows up any dip and the joints can open. Vinyl is slightly more forgiving. We'll assess the floor and level it before laying if it needs it.
Can herringbone be laid in a small room?
Yes, and it often works well. The diagonal pattern draws the eye across the space and can make a small room feel larger. The main consideration is setting out, so the pattern is centred and the cuts at the edges are balanced.
Can you lay herringbone over underfloor heating?
Usually, yes, as long as the product is rated for it. Vinyl herringbone in particular works well over underfloor heating. Check the manufacturer's maximum floor temperature, and let us know at the quote stage so we can specify accordingly.
