Cushion Flooring Derby
Cushioned vinyl supplied and fitted across Derby and Derbyshire — softer, warmer and quieter underfoot, for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
Cushion flooring is vinyl with a foam layer built in underneath. It costs little more than standard vinyl and makes a real difference in rooms where you stand for long periods, or where a fall would matter.

Comfort underfoot, without giving up practicality.
Cushion flooring, or cushioned vinyl, is sheet vinyl with a foam layer built in beneath the decorative and wear layers. If you prioritise comfort and softness underfoot, it's the obvious choice. Unlike harder floors such as tiles or wood, it gives a little as you walk on it, which suits rooms where you stand for long periods, such as kitchens and utility rooms.
It also takes the edge off a fall, which is part of why it gets specified in bathrooms and in homes where an older or less steady person lives, and it deadens sound, which is worth having in an upstairs room or a flat.
Why People Choose It
Moisture resistance: vinyl resists water well, so it suits bathrooms, utility rooms and any room prone to spills or humidity.
Low maintenance: a smooth, non-porous surface that sweeps and mops clean, and resists scratches, stains and everyday wear.
Design choice: the same wide range as standard vinyl, from classic wood looks to vibrant tile designs.
Cost: considerably cheaper than hardwood or natural stone, and only slightly more than standard vinyl, so it's an easy upgrade when comfort matters.
What to Watch For
Where a cushioned floor needs a little more thought than a solid one.
The foam layer that makes cushioned vinyl comfortable also makes it softer, so heavy furniture and point loads can leave indentations. Felt pads or wider feet under heavy items help, and it's worth mentioning any very heavy furniture or appliances when we quote so we can recommend a suitable thickness.
The floor underneath matters more too. A cushioned floor follows the shape of what's beneath it, so dips and lumps show through, and where there are gaps or open joints the vinyl can be damaged from below. We can screed or overboard the existing floor to give a flat, continuous base, and where a timber floor is bouncing or sagging we can replace boards or joists first.
Fitting Cushion Flooring
Part of what keeps cushioned vinyl affordable is that it's one of the easier floors to fit. It can often go over an existing floor such as concrete, plywood or ceramic tiles, provided that floor is flat and sound, which saves the cost and mess of lifting the old one.
We template the room so the sheet matches its shape, seal seams where a room is larger than a single width, and finish the edges and thresholds neatly. We'll fit cushioned vinyl you've bought yourself too.

Cushion Flooring Questions
Why choose Derbyshire Flooring Specialists to fit our cushion flooring?
We bring samples to your home so you can see and feel the options in the room they're going into, which matters more than usual with a cushioned floor because thickness and softness vary between products.
It's a complete supply and fit service, so there's no buying a floor from one shop and then looking for a fitter, and we'll fit a cushioned floor you've bought elsewhere.
What is cushion flooring made of?
It's a vinyl sheet built in layers: a clear wear layer on top, a printed decorative layer below it, and a foam or cushioned backing underneath that provides the softness. Some products add a reinforcing layer for stability.
Is cushion flooring suitable for a bathroom?
Yes. It's water-resistant, warm underfoot and softer if someone slips, which makes it a common choice for bathrooms. For a shower room or wet room where slip resistance is the priority, safety vinyl with cap coving is the better option.
Will heavy furniture damage a cushioned floor?
It can leave indentations, because the foam layer compresses under a concentrated load. Felt pads, wider feet or a load-spreading base under very heavy items help. Tell us about heavy furniture or appliances at the quote stage and we'll recommend a suitable thickness.
Can cushion flooring be laid over an existing floor?
Often, yes, provided the existing floor is flat, sound and dry. Because a cushioned floor follows the shape of what's underneath, any dips, lumps or open joints will show through and can damage it over time, so we'll assess the floor first and level or overboard it if needed.
How do I clean cushion flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly to keep grit off the surface, then mop with a mild detergent or a cleaner made for vinyl. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and wipe up spills promptly.
