Durable, slip-resistant and shock-absorbing, for busy commercial spaces and home gyms alike.
Rubber flooring is popular because of its durability, versatility and safety benefits. It's commonly used in commercial settings such as gyms, schools, hospitals and offices, and in homes for playrooms and home gyms. It withstands heavy foot traffic, resists stains and spills, and gives a comfortable, slip-resistant surface.
It also absorbs sound and shock, which makes it ideal where noise matters, such as fitness studios and childcare settings. And because it comes in a wide range of colours and patterns, it can be matched to your interior or your branding.
Gym Flooring
Choosing the right floor for how the space will be used.
Rubber is the most popular gym floor, and for good reason, but it isn't the only option. Vinyl flooring is resilient, easy to maintain and available in various thicknesses that stand up to heavy equipment and high foot traffic. Cork is a natural option that absorbs shock and gives good traction, but it isn't as hard-wearing as rubber. Wood can be used in gyms with proper sealing and maintenance, but it's expensive, especially to repair if it's damaged.
Within a gym, different areas need different floors. Free-weight areas need thicker, denser rubber to protect the subfloor from dropped weights, while cardio and studio areas can use a thinner rubber. We'll advise on thickness and format for each zone, and by combining colours you can mark out areas, pathways or zones with the floor itself.
Acoustic Rubber Underlay
We have installed many acoustic flooring underlays. Acoustic rubber underlay is designed to reduce noise transmission and absorb impact sound, which makes it a good choice wherever sound control is a priority, including homes, offices and commercial buildings.
It reduces the noise of footsteps, moving furniture and other impacts, which matters most where a gym or busy room sits above or beside other occupied space. It can also add a little thermal insulation. Whether it's a new build or a renovation, get in touch to find out more.

Rubber and Gym Flooring Questions
Why choose Derbyshire Flooring Specialists to fit our rubber flooring?
We provide a complete rubber flooring service. We take the hassle out of choosing and sourcing the right rubber floor, and we bring samples to view in the space where the floor will be fitted.
We fit all sorts of rubber flooring, so whether it's a professional commercial gym or a converted garage gym at home, we can provide the right floor, with the experience and attention to detail to fit it well.
Is a rubber floor non-slip?
Generally, yes. Rubber has a high coefficient of friction, which gives good grip underfoot, and many rubber floors have a textured or patterned surface that adds to it. That's why it's popular in gyms and commercial kitchens. As with any floor, slip resistance varies by product and finish, so check the manufacturer's data for wet areas.
Which rooms are most suitable for rubber flooring?
Rubber is especially well suited to gyms and exercise rooms, where it absorbs shock and helps reduce the risk of injury, and to commercial kitchens, where it's durable, easy to clean and comfortable for staff standing for long periods. It also works well in playrooms, childcare settings and home gyms.
How do I clean and maintain rubber flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt and grit. For a deeper clean, mop with a mild detergent mixed with water. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, which can damage the rubber surface.
Is rubber flooring an environmentally friendly option?
It can be. Many rubber floors are made from recycled tyre granules, which keeps that material out of landfill, and natural rubber comes from the sap of rubber trees, which can be tapped without felling the tree. Rubber is also very long-lasting, so it doesn't need replacing often. Products vary, so if sustainability matters to you, ask about the environmental credentials of the specific floor.
How thick should gym flooring be?
It depends on how each area will be used. Free-weight and lifting areas need thicker, denser rubber to absorb dropped weights and protect the subfloor, while cardio machines and studio spaces can use thinner rubber. We'll advise on the right thickness for each zone of your gym.
